Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an entry of 1000 forward with all classes of lambs selling to a slightly sharper trade with lambs selling to a market average of 162p/kg. Vendors with fed lambs on hard feed were seeing the financial benefits with well-finished lambs best to sell. Beltex lambs saw best conformation lambs regularly selling around the 200p/kg mark topping at 206p/kg from JG & PH Thompson, Selside with others to 205p/kg from J Twigge, Lindale. The day’s trade was topped at £93 for Beltex lambs from JG Harryman, Hawkshead, with others selling to £90 from JB & BJ Escolme, Killington. Texel Lambs sold to a top of £88 from DM Cardwell, Stalmine, closely followed by £87 from RH, M & S Boyren, Ulverston. It was great to have numerous pens of lambs selling in the eighties today. Mules sold to a top of £75 from P & TL Edmondson, Kirkby-in-Furness.

Cast Sheep

The cast ewe trade remained very similar with, once again, just short of 700 ewes on offer this week. Big heavy, well-fleshed ewes continue to well sold with small leaner and hill bred ewes not seeing much improvement in the trade yet. Topping today at £108 was Texel ewes from RG Blackburn, Great Strickland. Charollais ewes topped at £88 with plenty of pens of strong Continental and Suffolk ewes selling either side of the £80 mark.
