NWA J36 held its fortnightly sale of pigs which saw a nice entry forward with heavy well finished gilts easiest to sell.
A top price of £140 was achieved for white gilts from G Hargreaves with Pietrain X hogs achieving £127 from N J Wilkinson. Other hogs and gilts were £100 - £116 from W Stamper who also sold boars to £111.
A top price of 149p/kg was paid for Pietrain X hogs from N J Wilkinson with others generally 100p/kg – 120p/kg dependent on weight and finish.
Weaners were a fierce trade with gilts to £60 from AJ & EJ Platt, younger gilts and boars £42 - £48 with nothing less than £32.
Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an entry of 1000 forward with all classes of lambs selling to a slightly sharper trade with lambs selling to a market average of 162p/kg. Vendors with fed lambs on hard feed were seeing the financial benefits with well-finished lambs best to sell. Beltex lambs saw best conformation lambs regularly selling around the 200p/kg mark topping at 206p/kg from JG & PH Thompson, Selside with others to 205p/kg from J Twigge, Lindale. The day’s trade was topped at £93 for Beltex lambs from JG Harryman, Hawkshead, with others selling to £90 from JB & BJ Escolme, Killington. Texel Lambs sold to a top of £88 from DM Cardwell, Stalmine, closely followed by £87 from RH, M & S Boyren, Ulverston. It was great to have numerous pens of lambs selling in the eighties today. Mules sold to a top of £75 from P & TL Edmondson, Kirkby-in-Furness.
Cast Sheep
The cast ewe trade remained very similar with, once again, just short of 700 ewes on offer this week. Big heavy, well-fleshed ewes continue to well sold with small leaner and hill bred ewes not seeing much improvement in the trade yet. Topping today at £108 was Texel ewes from RG Blackburn, Great Strickland. Charollais ewes topped at £88 with plenty of pens of strong Continental and Suffolk ewes selling either side of the £80 mark.
